TeckNet Cooling Portable Ultra Slim Notebook
My Buddy James V. Jenkins Jr. say Review of Cooling Pad after 11 months of use.
I bought my cooling pad in February, 2016, so 11 months of use. The unit draws air down through the laptop and out either side. My laptop is a HP 15.7" and fits the pad quite well. A 17" laptop would overhang the sides some. My use is for heavy business use, but no gaming. I understand gaming computers have much more waste heat and as such I can not speak to that operating environment. For my use, the pad does a great job of cooling my laptop.
After about 10 months of use, I noticed extra noise coming from the pad, especially upon restarting the laptop after it had been turned off for a few hours. Being an engineer, I had to investigate. (I was concerned there might be a bad fan bushing that would mean the end of the cooling pad was likely soon.) The investigation required disassembly of the pad, i.e. removing the four rubber feet, 6 screws, and the expanded metal grill covering the fans. My tools were a flashlight, a jewelers Phillips head screwdriver, a small flat head screwdriver, Q-tips, a cleaning cloth, and a can of canned air. What I found was a pronounced accumulation of hair on the leading edges of the fan blades as well as dust on the remainder of the blades. After a through cleaning and reassembly, the pad was running as quietly at the day I first put it to use.
It would seem the hair accumulations had the small fans out of balance causing the pronounced vibrations that I had been hearing. Hair accumulations on the leading edges of fan blades in a common issue with portable fans used in the home. Also, I do have four cats.
The disassembly and reassembly were easy enough. The only negative that I found we the way the expanded metal screen was secured into the cooling pad housing. Essentially, short extensions of the expanded screen were used as tabs that were then folded down into the housing. I could imagine these tabs could eventually break off during future cleaning tasks, due to cold working of the thin metal screen. This is a very minor issue only an engineer would be concerned about and does not impact the ability of the pad to do its function.
For the circumstances described above, I consider this to be a very acceptable cooling pad for the money.
My Old Fellow TJ Land experience Well designed cooling pad. Lightweight. Fans don't light up..
This is a well designed cooling pad. It fits right under my 2012 MacBook Pro 13 (13.3" display). This cooling pad measures 14 inches by 11 inches. Diagonally it's 17.5 inches. It's lightweight so it makes it easy to carry around with my laptop on top.
Has 2 cooling fans that I can barely hear. The fans are blue in color but they don't light up when they're running. There is a blue led in the back right beside the power switch that indicates if it's on.
Connects to my MacBook via USB. This leaves one USB port available in the back of the cooling pad next to the power switch.
The bottom and sides of the cooling pad have openings that allow more air to flow in to the fans. Okay to use directly on my lap since it also draws air in from the sides. My MacBook stays in place and doesn't slip off the slightly angled surface. I am pleased with this product.
My Old Neighbor JC said Makes little difference in temperatures - fans do nothing - not great for gaming.
The pad allows for a little cooling, but the little amount it does has nothing to do with the fans.
The fans are definitely quiet. The lighting looks nice. The grips are great and my laptop sat perfectly on it without budging or sliding. Would have given 2 stars for the decent design, but their own video states about their fans: "Strong Wind, High-Speed Operation", which quite simply is a lie.
The fans are quiet because they're only 1200rpm. They move little to no air. The only discernible cooling I could see happening with this pad is that it is raising your laptop up off of any flat surface. This will allow the laptop's own fans/vents to work better. I fired up some gaming sessions to see the differences between having the cooling pad's fans on, fans off, and no cooling pad at all. I saw a temperature drop of about 4-5 degrees Celsius using the pad versus not using the pad (see images). I consider this almost negligible, but I suppose if that's all you're looking for, great. However, turning the fans on or off made almost no difference at all. Possibly by only 1 degree (see images).
The pad is not expensive, and I think the build is fine. Yes, the plastic is cheap feeling, but the grating is metal. I suppose if just having something to put your laptop on that lifts it up and increases airflow, and just the small temperature difference is all you need, 20 some odd dollars is decent. For me, though, with a gaming laptop, I was expecting more - and for that matter - for the included fans to actually do something. Unfortunately at only 1200rpm, they don't really do anything at all. Who cares if they're quiet when simply turning them off results in pretty much the same benefit? No noise is better than a little noise, yes?
My Fellow James Talk Awesome Cooling Pad.
I currently have a 13 in laptop, and you can see what that would look like on this cooling pad in the pictures I posted. My laptop is one of those thinner laptop, so it doesn't have great fans to cool itself down. I bought this pad because of the design, and because people said its great at cooling down your laptop. So the design of this pad is quite beautiful, very minimalist, but also quite smart. Currently I'm using this cooling pad on my lap right now because the design allows for it; the openings on the side allows for a great amount of airflow. As I've said before, my laptop is not great at cooling itself down, hence why I bought this pad. This cooling pad can really cool down your laptop. I'm a student, more specifically an engineering student, so I use many, for lack of better word, computer intensive software (e.g. SolidWorks). I also often use a second monitor, and run many tabs on Google Chrome, and this cooling pad is able to keep my laptop at a cool, comfortable temperature of around 50 - 60 degrees Celsius.
I would highly recommend this cooling pad, 10/10 :)
My Old Fellow Scott said Great price for a great product.
This thing is a game changer... Literally. I use my laptop for gaming - roughly an hour or two at a time. I like to run games with high quality graphics, and thus, my computer works harder and heats up. In the past, I would put my knees up to give my laptop some breathing room which is very uncomfortable for long term use. This cooling pad allows my legs and computer to stay cool for long periods of computer usage.
I have just over a 17 inch laptop - I was a little nervous because it is slightly bulky. The computer extends slightly off the outsides of the pad but it doesn't have a negative affect on the cooling. The sticky band on the bottom keeps my laptop in place even when I'm moving around. I highly recommend this to anyone that hates their laptop burning their legs. 5 Stars.
My friend SBD experience Overall a nice product for the price.
First thing I noticed is that the fans are not led lit, as the picture would lead you to believe. I honestly feel this is a good thing because I think LEDs would get on my nerves. The overall build quality is just OK. It's completely made of plastic but the plastic seems thick and provides an overall sturdy product. The added "grip" strip located towards the bottom on the front is a nice touch and keeps my laptop from sliding around. There is an on and off switch located on the back of the unit and it does come with a short USB cable for power. There is also a USB passthrough, which is a nice touch for someone like me using a MacBook Air. The unit does a good job at keeping my laptop cool, but is a little louder than I expected... Don't get me wrong, it's not crazy loud, but in a silent room it's noticeable. I would buy this product again and I would recommend it to a friend.
My Buddy Lynn Moran tell us Nice quiet cooling pad!.
I really like this cooling pad, it is quiet and fits my Toshiba laptop perfectly. Gives it a slight tilt forward which I also like. Another plus is that if the computer is shut down the pad also shuts down whether or not you remember to flip its switch off. All in all I can't think of any negatives.
My Fellow Haleigh Ray Talk Not worth the 2-4 degree Fahrenheit difference..
I'm not one to leave reviews but I couldn't help but feel like I needed to. For starters I guess i'll list the pros seeing as its going to be a much shorter list. Please note that I am in the IT field by profession and have touched thousands of different tech toys and tools. some amazing, and other not so much. This item falls under the "not-so-much" department.
For Reference : (Used on my Alienware R3 13-inch Gaming Laptop with a 6GB GTX 1060, and Intel i5)
Pros:
1) ONLY 14.2 inches wide. (from left edge to right edge)
--This was particularly important to me as I already carry about 20 lbs of tech and tools to work with me. I was able to fit it in my bag which is 14 inches wide on the inside. (it was snug but my bag allowed for the flex of the .2 inches difference.)
2) USB Pass-through
-This unit is powered via USB 2.0. with that being said they did include a second USB 2.0 port which gives you back that extra USB port they needed to power the device.
3) Rubber anti-slip strip.
- As I was shopping around, I noticed that not many manufactures included the anti-slip strip on the bottom of the surface which the laptop sits on. This little detail (though may not seem like much) is very much so appreciated. It adds a bit of comfort-ability and stability when using in bed, typing rapidly, or moving from one location to another.
I feel like that is all I can say about this device as far as the Pros are concerned. Now, Here’s what you are really buying.
1)Low-quality plastic
-The second I removed this item from the box instantly noticed how cheap this thing felt. I have felt cardboard more ridged. I know I’ve only had it for a couple days but I’m not sure if this device will make it past a couple months of being jammed in and out of my bag, not to mention tossed around in my car on my way to and from work.
2)Terrible fans, Low RPM, and air flow.
-Now I don’t know what kind of a difference the average user is looking for in regards to temperature, before and after this device. What I do know is that I’m 100% certain they are looking for a temperature decrease more that 2-4 degrees Fahrenheit! Seriously guys, I understand that your options are limited with USB 2.0 only pushing 100mA and trying to keep it cost effective but at this point I’m not sure if it was even worth manufacturing. Power limitations aside these fans are awful. You can barely feel ANY airflow with a damp hand .25 inches directly above the fan (I did this).
Input for manufacturer:
--Before I mention the things I would do differently with this device, I will acknowledge the fact that it is only $21.00. I’m sure if I spent a little more, I would probably be much happier and have less to complain about. With that said, I would gladly pay more if the device met the user’s standards. A few things I would recommend changing in order to produce a better, more functional, and reliable device.
- Use high-grade plastic.
o Maybe they were trying to keep the device light weight with the thin cheap plastic but ultimately it just feels fragile and I’m hoping my unit lasts more than a couple months (though I wouldn’t bet on it).
- POWER POWER POWER!
o Utilizing USB 3.0 or 3.1 allows for at minimum 150mA. Maybe integrating some sort of USB 3.0 hub to provide independent power to each fan and provide extra ports to accommodate the user as USB ports are a commodity in modern devices. Not to mention, should someone have an old laptop (pre-USB 3.0) they can still use the thing on a 2.0 port at lower rpm.
- Better Fans
o The sticky adhesive holding the fans controller base to the inside of the pad isn’t a terrible idea however upgrading the fans to higher quality and better performing blades is a must. We need more pressure if we are going to be effective.
Conclusion:
Unfortunately, I am extremely let down by the low quality and lack of performance from this cooling pad. From the cheap parts, under-powered fans, lack of any practical thought behind the users needs, and underwhelming results, I can confidently say there are many things that are left to be desired. Certainly, they need improvement if they plan to keep selling these things. I’m going to continue using this device for another week or so, but ultimately this one will probably end up in a yard sale or lost in the garage somewhere. Go spend a little more money on a higher quality, and better performing cooling pad. I really, truly hope that these companies care more about the user instead of a few cents and take honest input constructively to produce items that the end-user will want to keep purchasing.
My friend suzy said I recommend you buy it.
My daughter mentioned how hot my laptop was when she used it in her lap. She suggested I get a cooling pad. I really didn't know what she was talking about but went on a search and saw this one from Amazon. It came earlier than I expected and I opened it wondering what it would do. For one thing, my laptop is more comfortable in my lap which is a plus. It has 2 fans that I can't hear (quite!) but that are cooling the bottom of my laptop. All I had to do was plug in the USB cord that was included - 1 into USB of computer (Dell Inspiration 15) and the other end into the cooling pad. It even has a light that lights up to show it is working, as well as an on off switch. I'm happy! I also loved the instructions - simple as they were - were in English with a link if you needed another language. An enclosure informed me to register purchase with the company and get an extended 6 month warranty which I will do because my impression of the company is very positive. (And I have never seen this from any other company). It came packaged in heavy cardboard and protected with bubble wrap which I appreciated. I recommend and gave it a perfect 5 stars. I will be looking for other TECKNET products as a result of buying this.
My Buddy WestieBoys tell us A/C for Your Computer!.
This works great. I looked at a lot of cooling pads before picking this one. I like that this pad can sit on your lap or a blanket, and that air can still circulate from the sides. Even with two fans running, it is extremely quiet. I like the fact that it uses a USB cord and switch to power the unit from the back and not the bottom, so that the cord and switch will not get damaged. The additional USB port is a nice bonus. Works well with my 13" Macbook Pro, keeps everything cool.
