MOTOROLA MG7700 AC1900 Gigabit Maximum
My Fellow CTN412 experience Better than renting! Pay for itself overtime!.
I had just moved into a new home and Xfinity is the only game in town. Previously, with FIOS I was renting the modem/router monthly. I told myself that the next company won't get me on that again. Although this is an expensive out of pocket cost now, I know that it will pay for it self down the line. I did a lot of reading and research between the different models and decided on this one. Installation was flawless. I was already connected to the internet even before the tech was able to finishing setting up the cable for the TV. Signal is strong all around the house. No issues/problems thus far.
Edit: Just want to update that the modem have been solid for the last 4 months. Signal is strong covering 3400 sf home.
My Buddy Bob K Talk Replaced my Xfinity rented modem/router. Wow!.
Did my research and purchased this modem/router to replace my Xfinity/Comcast router which cost me $11/mo to rent. Why did I not do this earlier??? This new router will pay for itself in 15 months which is nice, but the performace upgrade was so dramatic I could not believe it! My rented Xfinity router was less than a year old. It had trouble reaching the 3rd floor of my house with reliable signal. My Nest cam would go off-line several times a day (very annoying and I was blaming Nest). Download speeds were ok but not impressive. With this new router, I'm getting strong signal on the 3rd floor and my nest cam hasn't gone off-line since I switched over about 3 weeks ago. Download speeds are 2-3 times faster than with the Xfinity router. Bottom line, this Motorola router absolutely rocks. I could not be happier!
My Old Man S. Brooks said Excellent product, but beware of self-activation issues if you have an existing rented Xfinity modem..
The device itself works perfectly. However, the self-install process with Xfinity failed. I have an existing Xfinity account with a rented modem. I was forced to call Xfinity to register the Motorola modem. First the tech had to deactivate the Xfinity modem. Then the new Motorola modem was activated via its MAC address. This process took about 30 minutes. After that, all is well.
My Old Fellow Sashy say Good looks, easy setup. But range is no better than my older cheaper router and firmware is not user-updatable..
With my first router - much cheaper than this one - I had trouble getting a strong WiFi signal (or any signal) in some corners of my house (it’s not a big house, but it’s 3 stories). So I replaced it with a Netgear Orbi mesh router with a satellite unit, and that solved my WiFi coverage problems.
About a year later, I needed to replace my modem, so I figured why not buy one device that could replace both my modem AND the Orbi? I decided to get this MG7700 since its beam forming and power boost features sounded like they might be enough to overcome my home’s WiFi coverage challenges, without needing a mesh router with an extra satellite unit.
Well, it turns out I was wrong. Even though this is a much more expensive and fancier router, it still has the same problems providing a strong wifi signal throughout my home that I had with my original older cheaper router. So I’m going to return this MG7700, buy a new cable modem, and continue using my Orbi mesh router.
(Apparently 5ghz signals have more trouble going thru walls etc compared to 2.4ghz... I saw that when I connected my iPhone to the 5ghz SSID, it lost that connection in a far corner of my house, but in the same spot my iPhone could still see the 2.4ghz SSID).
WiFi coverage issues aside, I did like this product... setting up was easy; I just plugged it in, went to the URL given in the instructions, and then I was prompted to sign into my Xfinity account; activation took under 30 minutes (I didn't hang around to wait).
Since this is dual band you have one SSID for 2.4Ghz and a different one for 5Ghz (you can also have one or two separate guest networks if you like). This is nice because it gives you more control over which device you want to have on which network, but keep in mind that although 2.4Ghz is more susceptible to interference than 5Ghz, it has less trouble going through walls; for instance in my kitchen nook my iPhone 7 disconnected the 5Ghz network but could still see the 2.4Ghz network in WiFi settings. To reduce this problem somewhat you can set both SSIDs to be the same and leave it up to your devices to choose, and that's what I did (side note - the Orbi uses the same SSID for both and you can't make them different - that's probably the best way to go if you have good coverage for both networks).
The status and configuration pages are usable; I've seen better and worse on other similar products. One thing I miss that most other routers seem to have is a place to see all connected devices at a glance, instead you can only see wireless devices, and you have to view the 2.4 and 5Ghz devices on separate pages. There are tons of advanced settings that I didn't play with but nearly everything has an info popup with explanations.
Physically it's a decent looking device with a simple appealing design. It is not as big and ugly as the Xfinity combo modem+router I was renting, and it also doesn’t resemble an alien spaceship with antennas bristling out like some other high performance routers. Having it stand vertically saves shelf space and the LED indicators are clear and fairly self-explanatory.
Combining the modem and router into a single device obviously makes for less clutter, but I discovered one downside - the firmware is NOT user-updatable. This is normal for cable modems, but every other router I've owned let me update the firmware. It's too bad they didn't allow updating of just the router functions of the device. The manual says that when there are updates they will be sent to your ISP for them to approve and automatically deploy - but I wouldn’t hold my breath!
My Old Neighbor Angleiron say An overall excellent product but there's at least one firmware problem to work out.
Set up was very easy, the range is excellent, 2.4GHz and 5 GHz frequencies are very nice to have, I've hooked up Nest Thermostat, Yi Dome Camera, LG TV, ChromeCast, PS4, Samsung DVD/Home Theater, Yamaha DVD player, iPhone, and HP Laptop - the performance is excellent. The one wrinkle I found was when changing the default admin password, I was able to successfully set a short password but when I tried to set a long password, the modem would seem to accept the change, but I would not be able to log in using these longer password forcing me to need to reset the modem to restore the default password. I didn't experiment enough to find the length limit where the failure occurs... So I've settled on a shorter admin password. I've logged an issue with Motorola, presumably this issue can be easily corrected with a firmware update. My current firmware version is (7700-5.7.1.8).
My friend Tim Jenson say Delivers on What it Promises.
A no hype, wireless gateway, what it says it will do it will. Recently got this because my internet provider (Xfinity) notified me that my internet could go as high as 400Mps and my current modem couldn't handle any more than 260Mbs., upgraded this tried speedtest.net and managed to get as high as a 496Mps. This is also my first modem that supports the ac protocol, by the way, you need to be on the 5Ghz frequency to make use of that, this increased the speeds of my iPhone and iPad which already had the ac protocol built in. I did have to get a Wireless adapter for my computer that supports AC to get the full advantage of the extra speed. Would highly recommend!
My friend Todd C Blake said Great Modem/Router!.
The Motorola MG7700 is an awesome modem/router. It replaced an older Netgear N450 modem/router that kept dropping its WiFi connection, and had to be rebooted constantly. The Setup of the MG7700 was very easy, and it did not even require calling Comcast to get it configured. I just went to the activation website and put in my Comcast account information. The MG7700 was connected to the Comcast network within 15 minutes (150 mbps plan). The MG7700 improved the WiFi connection to all of my N and AC wireless devices. I live in a 2400 square foot house and I have multiple RING security cameras around the perimeter of the house. The connection between the MG7700 and all of the RING devices is fast with no dropped connections ever. I also have 3 Rokus, a Samsung Smart TV, a Honeywell thermostat, 3 cell phones, 2 laptops, a tablet, 2 Echo Dots and 3 Amazon smart switches connected intermittently to the MG7700 throughout the day. They all stay connected with outstanding WiFi speeds. In fact my Acer laptop connects by AC wireless at 866 mbps. Most of the N wireless devices connect around 156 mbps, and everything stays connected without any drops. I also have 3 desktop computers (1 is a server) and 1 network printer connected to the 4 ethernet ports with no connectivity issues at all. I have been a Network Administrator for over 20 years, so setting up the MG7700 was really easy for me. For those that need help there are many online websites that show how to "tweak" the settings in the MG7700 for the best Wireless connectivity. Trust me the suggestions do work to maximize the WiFi connections. For security purposes I highly recommend changing the MG7700 user name and password. Also change the SSIDs and their security keys, along with the default IP address of the MG7700. Lastley, make sure that the firewall is turned on. This will keep those prying eyes off of your home network. I have used many Motorola products over the years, and they have all worked great. The MG7700 is no exception. Those individuals leaving bad reviews either do not know how to setup a WiFi router correctly, or just received a lemon (it happens). I highly recommend the MG7700 to anyone that wants a fast, secure and reliable home network.
My Fellow Benjamin Musburger Talk All in One..
Love it so far. Covers 2000 sq ft home and out door deck and patio. Former Motorola modem and TP-Link router were frequently dropping signal and the range appeared to be diminishing. Strong signal with this hardware and it has not dropped connection once yet. Internet speeds appear faster. Like the option of having both 5 and 2.4 networks available.
My Old Chap M. Carelli tell us Avoid Motorola products. Substandard quality. Warranty process unreasonable. Never again, Motorola..
Unit initially worked well, but for only 5 mos and then it suddenly and completely stopped functioning. Comcast had to come out 3 x to troubleshoot our internet problems until determining what turned out to be our dying Motorola MG7700 modem. When I called Motorola to see about getting a warranty replacement , I was told that I had to reconnect the defective unit , try to reactivate it before they could process a warranty replacement . Really? After dealing with the problem for two whole weeks , having Comcast techs here 3x , having to pay to have a Comcast rental modem installed and activated and FINALLY restoring service, you want me to undo all that and put the defective, non functioming Motorola back in , waste more of my time activating it and still find out that it is defective ? Ummmm , I don't think so. I'd rather spend the time spreading the word to NEVER BUY MOTOROLA PRODUCTS.
My Old Chap MCCONRA said Major Firmware and internal issues.
After one month the router had issues with dropping signals and cycling. Was able to be fixed once by comcast tech support, problem reoccurred one day later and is now unfixable by them. Since it is after the 30 day return policy, amazon wont accept a return or replacement so I was forced to send it to the Manufacturer for a replacement which took 2 weeks and I was forced to pay shipping. Not worth the plastic it is made out of. Avoid this router/modem at all costs.
