All New Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet
My friend Tim experience So Slow!.
I have been buying kindle fire kids editions for years now. I bought two of these new 8inch tablets. I have at least 6 others. from 7in to the new 10in version. THESE ARE BY FAR THE SLOWEST. I bought these to upgrade two older generation Fire HD 8s mostly because of the USB-C on this model. BIG MISTAKE! Amazon push an update to fix these!
My friend Alifiya tell us Awesome for kids!!!.
We got it today & its really nice.. Best part you can creat your kids profile & keep track of their screen time for reading, games & videos.. You also have your own profile where you can watch prime videos, use alexa & much more.. even you can download apps like netflix & youtube.. Its a great product with 2 year worry free warranty. 👍
My friend Matt tell us Overall decent tablet for a kid.
Bought this to entertain our 20 month old with movies will on an upcoming road trip. Overall I feel like it is a decent value.
Pros
- freetime unlimited is a great one stop place for kids entertainment.
- 2 year warranty if my kid destroys it
- case is big and soft, stand works well
Cons
- Tablet is very slow right out of the box, will probably be unusable in a year or so.
- cannot favorite certain apps in freetime for some reason, like nick jr. so you have to go looking for them everytime you want to run it.
- screen does not get very bright and it is hard to see in direct sunlight
You could get an iPad setup with the same case and freetime for about double the price but you don't get the warranty. If you want to use it as a tablet in addition to entertainment for your kids look elsewhere. If it's just for a kid then it's fine.
My Old Fellow Koz say Limited Permission on Child Account, break AppStore Apps, and Kickstand has only 1 position.
After fighting it for last 2 days, I decided to return it. It has great potential but I want my daughter to talk to her family across the world using Messenger Kids but when you load an app outside of FreeTime, it blocks permission to allow camera and storage access from the Child Account, thus cannot get video to work. I understand Amazon probably did this by design to protect kids, but I wish there was an overwrite option from adult profile, but there is not.
Additionally, the provided kickstand has really only one angle. Wish there was multiple stops on it. Anyway, not for me/my family but don't let it discourage you, it probably fantastic for others.
My Old Fellow Rita S said Returning for another.
Received this tablet yesterday and after charging overnight it would not even turn on. I am returning and getting another and see if there is a problem with the charger or tablet. This was a gift for our grandson and sadly it will be late now. I hope this next one is good!
My Old Man Celia F say Not impressed..
unable to download videos. Tablet keeps going offline. Added content and it keeps restarting the download and won't finish adding content. I ungraded to the new model from the last edition for my son's birthday and I regret that decision.
My Buddy Alyssa experience We love our tablet!.
We love our tablet. My son is 3 and loves all the videos and games all educational! I get to set it up to where it’s age appropriate items and I can also switch profiles to mine and do things on my profile. Pretty great device and he can play on some apps without WiFi! Bigger plus. Great purchase.
My Fellow TS Talk Great tablet.
My son loves his tablet he had the Gen 7 7” and we upgraded after 2 years to the gen 10 8” with a kickstand he still loves it watches lots of educational videos set a timer for the day so he doesn’t watch to much it has really helped him find his voice before the tablet he didn’t speak much the tablet with a few videos definitely helped his interactions are great his speech therapist says he is doing great now
My Buddy KenH say Screen Times Out In 1 Minute And This Can Not Be Changed While In Child Profile/FreeTime.
This 2020 HD 8 was purchased to replace a 2017 HD 8 whose battery had failed. While in the Child's Profile using FreeTime, the 2020 version will time out (screen go blank) after 1 (one) minute if the screen has not been touched. This happens while downloading items and while playing games. Videos do not appear to be affected. If a download takes more than a minute the screen turns off. If during a game you stop touching the screen for 1 minute the screen will turn off.
Our 3 year old, who has be using FreeTime on the 2017 version of the HD 8 tablet for 9 months, is getting frustrated with this behavior on the 2020 tablet. As a result, she is using it less than before.
This is happening with a fully charged battery and plugged into the charger.
I have set the Display Timeout to 10 minutes on the Adult Profile, however this setting does not carryover to the Child Profile and FreeTime. I have found no settings within the Child Profile or FreeTime to change this behavior. I have contacted Amazon Fire Support about this issue. They too were unable to change the time out behavior.
I still have a 2016 version of the HD 8 tablet on which I tested the Child Profile and FreeTime. On this tablet, the time out occurs in about 5 (five) minutes of no activity. This is much better than 1 minute.
Amazon please change this setting soon as the tablet is unusable in it's current configuration. I may be forced to return this tablet.
My friend Mir tell us Glitchy. Major Content restriction issues for kids.
We bought two of these for our kids. Biggest issue is Amazon Free Time Unlimited, but there are also slowness issues that we shouldn’t be having on a brand-new device with this amount of memory.
Pros:
- Profiles and time limits. We can choose a child’s profile and set different time limits on kinds of activity, total usage time, wake up (can’t use before) and bedtime (can’t use after) and weekday/weekends. We got these for our kids so this aspect is wonderful. Switch to an adult profile (passcode required) and you don’t have to worry about the limits.
-Case. The case is sturdy and has a great stand. This is huge with a 4-year-old
Cons
-Freetime Unlimited! My kids have access to literally Tens of thousands of books, apps and videos I haven’t vetted. I can’t figure out how to turn it off. Even more obnoxious: during the setup I thought I was selecting the specific apps my kids could access. Turns out not. Instead of opt-in it’s opt OUT for each and every book and app that you’ve downloaded OR that’s available on Freetime Unlimited. Tens of thousands. Impossible. All Amazon would need to have done was make these _opt-in_ and I would not be a Pissed Off Parent.
- Loading of and within apps is slow and it freezes. Freezes? On a new device? Seriously?! On ABC Mouse people.
This means I’m hitting reset for my kids at least twice a day. Again, new device and they’re not allowed on them for very long.
Bottom line, the price is good, case is good, and device within is solidly mediocre.
