TP Link N450 Wi Fi Router TL WR940N
My Fellow REVIEWER71 said Excellent product.
Excellent product for a average sized home.
The setup was very easy.
The speed is faster than my old router—which was a 5 year TP Link—I hope this one last as long.
I do have coverage throughout the home without any dead spots. (About 1,900 square feet, 1 story.)
I really just live this product.
My Old Man tuBgrateful Talk Rock Solid, Long Range.
I am a professional AV Tech. I carry this router with me all the time, to wirelessly connect to my digital audio mixers, video switchers, lighting controllers, etc. The 5g signal it gives is rock solid, connection is always quick and hassle free, never fails, and has a range of about 300 feet. (Open room, not through walls).
I highly recommend this router.
My Old Chap Bean Bag Man Talk Great reception and easy to set up. Don't worry about the other reviews like I did.
I don't often write reviews but read a lot of them, and wanted to put this out there to help anyone considering this router.
When I was comparing different lower cost routers it seemed like every product had negative reviews and pointed out flaws, to the point where it gave me pause on buying ANYTHING at all.
But bottom line this is a very good router for the price, simple to set up, and I recommend it BIGLY
1. Good reception in 2000 sq foot house. I have used multiple devices and streamed video with no problem.
2. SO SIMPLE to set up - right out of box, connect cord, plug in power, and use the SSID and password printed on the S/N label - no need to log in and do any configuration
Do not despair upon reading all the reviews and just order this if you're looking to stay under fifty buckaroos
My Fellow Jose Ignacio Dobles Talk If there was a 0-star review, it would still be too generous.
If I could give less than 1 star, I would. For context, I am a software developer, and have been for 10 years, so this is not a "I don't know how to use this" situation. I know very well how to configure a home network.
This router is terrible. A tin can with a cable has better stability that this item. I constantly lose Internet on a DAILY basis. I have another router that I used to have, and I have never had this problem in the past, so it's not the ISP.
The signal jumps like crazy, Internet becomes unavailable, and I have to reboot it manually constantly.
If you like playing games online, this will drive you INSANE. Ever tried playing a battle royale game, just to be killed because you lost connection for a moment? I have to have the router console in my second screen to hit the reboot button as soon as I see the game lagging because I know that 10 seconds later, the Internet is gone.
Never again buying TP-Link. Stick to Linksys, in my opinion.
My Buddy Peter W. Talk The best router I've EVER owned.
So far I have owned this product for a little over two months.
-First, set up was extremely easy. The SSID and password printed on the S/N label, there was no need to log in or do any sort of verifying online.
-Second, range has been great. In a 1,100 sq. ft. apartment we are able to connect to a full strength signal in all rooms.
-Third, SPEED! I have ran both 75 mbps and 25 mbps at different times and got almost my entire internet speed both separate times. If you check the speed test I ran we are getting almost the entire 25 mbps.
-Fouth, streaming. We do ALOT of streaming and internet surfing. With this router we've had two separate tv's streaming while phones and laptop were connected to the wifi as well. Not a single problem.
My old router from Qwest used to crap out and we would occasionally have to unplug it and reset it. Also, it was almost impossible to stream from two TV's and use a laptop. Not anymore! This router is great. Some people in the reviews have complained about how bright the blue connection lights are, this has not been a problem for me. Granted we keep the router in the living room, but the lights have never bothered me. You can see in the picture they are not that bright.
My Old Fellow J. P. GRANT said Amazon should't sell this product.
In the past, I have configured other routers successfully as access points. The TP-Link AC 1200 doesn’t allow you to access the router setup page if you have a modem-router combo gateway, but always defaults to the gateway IP. And there is no way that I found to temporarily bypass the gateway's router while configuring the new device.
Amazon's help agent had no specific knowledge of the TP-Link AC 1200 router in question, nor about how computer networks are configured in general. It is unfair to these employees and to customers to represent that they have strong skills in these areas. My call was a complete waste of time. The manufacturer's "chat help" was even worse. In all I wasted at least 4 hours dealing with these people.
The manufacturer's "Tether" app is supposed to make installation easy, but requires you to provide them with your email and password before you can sign in. This lack of security awareness and potential exposure to their marketing spam is unacceptable. The irony is that the router seems to be working perfectly on its default SSID and password, but using it that way exposes your network to any casual hacker.
Though I purchased new, it was obvious that this item had been previously returned to Amazon by another customer, as the packaging had been opened and there was handwriting on the instruction pamphlet. Shame on Amazon.
I will be returning this router.
My Old Chap Rod Maciver say 1 port works, 2 ports don't.
Just bought this piece of crap on Amazon. Three computers. Wired connection. One port works, two don't. Tech support number doesn't work. Chat does everything they can do to avoid the issue. Ask irrelevant questions. Blame the problem on the internet provider. When I ask them why, if it is the internet provider, one port works and two don't they don't answer.
My Old Fellow henry d-sl said It is 5 stars, definitely with severe power outage test.
Update: I was away, we had a severe thunderstorm in the area, power was out. I monitor my house remotely and thought unless I was physically there, everything would be off. The TP-Link went back online, the Netgear didn't even respond. All the cameras, Z-wave house controls went back on with the TP-Link. I never had such luck with the previous Netgear. I strongly recommend this inexpensive and work great router.
It is a bit early for rating since I tested only for 1 day. I may come back and give 1 star if it is dead after 1 week. However, for the time being, if you are looking for basic, low-price (the emphasis is low-price), this one is hard to beat. I used to be a tad leery of second tier network equipment makers like TP Link, but the it improves and the product is getting to be quite decent. There are two features that aren't great, but one shouldn't complain for this price: 1- it is not very responsive to admin access. oo many times it gives a page to tp-link website because the http server part doesn't work. A bit frustrating that one has to turn on, off, or reset. Also, it doesn't allow more than 1 admin log in at a times. The problem is that it doesn't detect the admin log in is broken, hence should allow open another log in to reboot. 2- It doesn't have DHCP list for wired connection. This is a real problem for me as I use both wifi and Ethernet. I have to use other network software to find out the IP's of wired devices.
Other than those two, for a minimum typical user, this one is perhaps as good as any in terms of bang for the buck. I purchased it only as a backup and an aggregate access point, but it impresses me enough to let it be the main wifi router and relegate the other router to be the access point.
One last thing about speed: I tested it side-by-side with a Netgear and a Linksys. As the other two are older models (1 year or more), I expected TP-link to be better with the newer 450 Mbs protocol. It is indeed proven better from 20% to 35% depending on location of my laptop within the house. So, again, it is a decent one.
My friend Douglas Howey said 450Mbps False Advertising is Misleading at best.
TP-Link Customer support answered my question/complaint (chat session on their website) by stating the Specs show network speeds are NOT 450Mbps. Their descriptors over and over again refer to 450Mbps network speeds. But their WAN port is only 10/100. This company needs to take away their 450Mbps Speed advertising statements and Overview Statements because most people do not know about negotiating speeds versus network speeds. The speed listed is generally understood to be the Network Speed. TP-Link did not care what I said and TP-Link Customer Support stands by their false advertising. The max WiFi speed possible on 2.4GHz is only about 40Mbps. I was hoping the 450Mbps would at least work over the LAN ports. Not so. 90Mbps is the top speed. And sadly, using more than one LAN port often failed to work, at the same time. My goal was to use the LAN ports for streaming devices and use the slower wifi for my SmartHome (smart home devices do not need high speeds.) Okay, the specs show 10/100 max speeds for the LAN ports. But, I still think Stating 450Mbps Wireless Speed is false on the face of it.
So, bottom line, from mpov: Only use this router if you only have ONE LAN Device (RJ45 ethernet cable) and wifi devices that of course only need slow WiFi. And your one LAN device will not be served with speeds higher than about 90Mpbs.
My Old Neighbor George Abihider say Stay away! Waste of money..
Well, I took a chance. It looked like a good wireless, but just under 4 months from day of purchase the unit died. No internet connection. The funny thing is I reinstalled a 15 year old D-Link and it worked fine. I would strongly recommend you stay away from TP-LINK unless you have the time to mess with returns.
6/1/16
Tried resetting the modem to factory defaults and set-up from scratch. Also utilized the MAC Clone feature to re-bind the modem and router, as recommended. Within two minutes the Internet symbol went from Blue to Orange indicating that the router has lost access to the internet.
Will let you know what Technical Support says.
