ARRIS Surfboard SB6183 Package Black
My friend Stephen Aniston experience People with Eero router system, do not buy this modem.
I bought this to replace my Optimum provided cable modem, but immediately after I installed it, I started having issues with Hulu, Netflix and all video streams. I had problems everywhere. On the FireTV, AppleTV, everywhere. It turns out this modem is a little outdated and doesn't work with Eero and you can't update its firmware so they recommend buying another modem.
Eero support says this:
If you have an Arris SB6183 modem and are experiencing the following issues with your eero WiFi system, you may be experiencing a bug:
Large file downloads stall or fail
Connection drops while streaming music and video wirelessly
Please note that a large number of customers use eero with SB6183 modems and do not experience these problems. A small subset of customers, however, have a firmware version called “SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-03-29-NOSH” installed on their modems. If you’re experiencing issues with your eeros, it’s likely that you have this version of firmware.
My Old Neighbor Electronicbuff said Nice Internet Modem to replace your cable company's rental modem.
Awesome cable modem that eliminates the monthly rental charges that cable companies live for. Capable of a download speeds up to 686MB. Has plenty of status lights on front to tell you what is happening at the moment. Can log into the unit to determine packet loss, errors and channel status.
This is a simple modem that does its job well. If you are paying Comcast, WOW!, Xfinity, or another company a monthly fee then this is the unit for you. Simple to setup. Just screw the coax into the coax connector, plug in the LAN cable for your router, and plug in the power cord. Then call your cable company and tell them you bought your own modem. They will ask you for the MAC id number on the bottom of the modem and then they will authorize it to work with their network. That's it and you are up and running.
PROS:
- Nice price
- Super easy to setup
- Saves you on monthly rental fees from your cable company
- Can support download speeds up to 686MB
- DOCSIS 3.0 for 16 Channels Down / 4 Channels Up
CONS:
- None
My Old Fellow Tito Colón said Big Difference in response and speed.
As soon as I installed it and got it authorized by my Optimum online, the internet speed was greatly noticeable. My pages would load way faster and videos on youtube etc would play alot quicker. I bought this device in order to save the $10 a month I was paying for renting the cablevision modem. I figured if it didn't make a difference in speeds, at least I would be saving the $10 monthly. I am so happy that I did this. I'm really happy with the end result. I should've known that big companies like cablevision/optimum online are not or won't give hi speed or quality equipment to their customers. I know the price they pay per modem is minimum. But we are the once using them. I would recommend to everyone that read this review, to go and get your own modem and forget about the low budget quality modem that these cable companies are giving their customers. If it doesn't work, try again or until you get a modem that works for you and your internet provider. Thanks you all for reading this and God bless.
My friend Aly. say Easily hit 200mbps no problem.
I have a Spectrum (formerly TWC)
The old modem they used give out sucks so I had to change that with this.. it works good.. just call the customer support, provide the mac address, then have them activated the modem from their end... Buy it!
My friend Elliot S. say Works great but already a registered MAC address.
I bought the Arris Surfboard SB6183 (new, in shrink wrap and everything) in order to stop paying the monthly modem rental fee to my service provider. The unit worked great and was easy to install, but unfortunately when I went to return the old equipment to CableVision, I found out that the MAC address of my new SB6183 had already been registered with them, thus I was still using 'their equipment'. They advised buying the same unit from Best Buy in order to avoid this problem.
Apparently Amazon and other 3rd party sellers get new units from the service providers themselves and re-sell them. Many of the other reviewers that are reporting 5 stars probably just got lucky in the sense that the one they got was registered with a different cable provider than the one they have. If that's the case, great for them. Just a word of caution that there's no guarantee that it will work for you.
My Old Man ACW1120 say This modem will support up to 500+ mbps Comcast 600 mbps plan - Revised.
6-8-2020 Revised - add one star back
I add one star back, the reason that my SB6183 cannot support 600 Mbps was due to the cable leakage, Comcast sent a technician to the outside cable box and correct the cable connection issue (reinstall the cable connector). It now supports up to a low 500 Mbps wired connection, it is still not 600 Mbps, but getting close. I would say, this cable modem will support 500 Mbps, but no more than that. I kept it at 4 stars because both Comcast/Arris web site provide conflicting information, Comcast officially says it only supports up to 370 Mbps, and Arris says it is a 676 Mbps modem.
The cable modem is reliable itself, it is a set-and-forget kind of device, the configuration and firmware update are all controlled by Comcast remotely.
- Original review
I talked to both Comcast and Arris technical supports, Comcast only supports SB6183 to 373 Mbps download, not the 676 Mbps speed as advertised at Amazon by Arris. Arris tech support insists that this is Comcast's problem by limiting this modem's capability arbitrarily. Comcast tech support showed their web page support site of the support speed is 373 mpbs max. I am caught in the middle of this football match.
To avoid getting into a bind like I am now, be aware that this modem will not support more than 300 Mbps, you need to purchase another modem if you think of upgrading to a higher speed plan.
Other than that, this modem performs well under the current 200 Mbps plan I have with Comcast.
My Buddy J. Halvorson tell us This ONE - x16 downstream; x8 Upstream. Dependable, affordable, and should last you ~14 years.
Sometimes, you look at the Specs - and you think "it's a Surfboard Modem, and the SB6190 boasts x32 downstream and x16 upstream - that has GOT TO BE BETTER", and you drop $140 in my case, and then you kick yourself.
Why? Because Intel released a buggy Puma chipset, and Arris (Motorola) released a crappy, over-priced, unstable modem - and has not gone to the trouble to either fix the Puma chipset, upgrade to a stable chipset, or even attempt a firmware fix.
So, what's wrong with the SB6190 and why do you want this one? After all, it's about half the maximum bandwidth. The "upgraded" modem boasts that is made for gaming. Unreliable connections, >50ms - 150ms jitter is the LAST thing anyone who games, or even streams Netflix wants. Do you like movies that pause for no reason at all? How about streaming apps that randomly freeze for no apparent reason? How about having to reboot your entire network (which can take 10 minutes alone) .... just because?
That's why you want this SB6183. It's capable of 650+ Mbps from Cox, Xfinity and others, it's DOCSYS 3.0 compliant, it's supported - it's pretty much legendary for being reliable - and STABLE. What you want in a home network, is a freakin' ROCK. You set it, and you forget it is there. It should last years - decades even. If the most typical home bandwidth today is 75 Mbps, and it was 25 Mbps just 5 years ago; then the next bump will be in the 200 Mbps range in ~7 years, and perhaps 600 Mbps in ~14 years. What else can you think of, that will likely be serving you just fine in ~14 years; besides a well built work truck?
My Old Fellow Jennifer M experience Does not work after 1 year.
My modem stopped working properly after about 1 year of installation. The modem keeps disconnecting and resetting because it thinks the incoming signal range is too low.
I have tested the signal range with 3 separate devices, with a technician. The incoming signal is perfect, according to another modem, and two signal meters.
The modem is reading -7.0 to -9.0 db signal strength, when the signal is actually +10.0 db. Due to this, the modem will not function properly and keeps having errors. There is no software/firmware upgrade to apply to fix this issue.
Because of this, I have to manually rest my modem every 24 hours to have internet. This is sub-par performance for any networking equipment, especially one of this caliber and price range.
My Old Neighbor dearlaserworks tell us Fast, affordable, easy drop-in upgrade.
We jumped from a 10 year old SB6121 to this SB6183 model. We have 100Mbps service, but the older model never went over 75Mbps, even if it was very reliable. This newer model peaks at over 90Mbps for us and hopefully will keep us happy as long as the previous model. It should since it is capable of over 5x the speed we pay for currently. I did have to call Spectrum to register the number for the new modem. Their online instructions make it sound like all you have to do is plug it in and visit a web page, but didn't work for us. The phone support was fast & painless and she confirmed that a phone call was required for installing customer supplied modems.
My Old Chap Fuzz say This is for the SB6183.
I don't know why amazon combines reviews for multiple items. It's dumb.
On to the review. Again this is for the model SB6183. Although I am not, nor never have gotten internet speed anywhere near the speed advertised by my ISP, I do not believe that is the modems fault. I have tried several different modems and have been on the phone several times with SuddenLink and I believe the issue is that my ISP simply over-allocates their bandwidth and so you never actually see the advertised speed with any modem, period. Since the speed varies depending on other factors like what time you log on, it is very hard to do a side by side comparison. That said, from my limited testing, the performance of this modem is as good or better than any of the lot and it also happens to be one of the cheapest. Why pay more?
